The Gift of Sharing – Part 3

Last January, I started a new tradition in this blog. Since I’ve always believed in the beauty and power of sharing, I wanted others to benefit from the same material I’ve enjoyed reading. I shared with you a few links that lead to articles that have inspired, helped and touched my life. Now, I’m happy to continue this tradition.

The first two parts focused on goal setting and self improvement this 2010. This next installment, on the other hand, will focus on starting a business. As I’ve mentioned before, I hope you too will take as much from these articles as I have. Oh, I just love the prospect of affecting other people’s lives, no matter how little, and having something to do with possibly changing them for the better. :)


Where and How To Start Your Business

There’s no time like that of recovery to think of starting anew with our lives – the old habits we could let go and new ones we could adapt, the assessment of where we are in our lives and if we are happy with whatever we’re doing at the moment.

Some people, maybe including you, take this time to think about and refine their plans for starting their own businesses or setting new goals for existing ones. Here are a few articles to help you figure out where to start and make sure that you’re putting the right time, effort and planning into the process.

1. A Home Based Business — Who, Why, When and Where to Start?
Are you interested and excited about the prospect of putting up your own home-based business? To not fret about the details and how much change it would bring to your life, find out the basic questions you should ask yourself before you start.

If you know how to use a computer and have one set up at home, and you have the willingness to learn everything else as you go along, then you are a perfect candidate for such a business. If the reason behind your need to start your own business is sound, you’re ready to take the leap and believe you’re ready and able to invest however much time you need, and see your home as a ready environment for a business – especially with everything that might be going on around you – then, there’s nothing stopping you from getting right down to building your own home-based business right now! :)

2. Take Your Solution Seriously
Everyone in this world has a talent, ability, characteristic and quality born uniquely to him. These are given to each one of us to help us shape ourselves into special individuals who, amazingly, were put on this earth to serve a purpose. We are each part of a solution to a problem. As sure as I’m breathing right now is the fact that someone, somewhere is in need of this solution we could offer. :)

If we let these talents and abilities go to waste, then we wouldn’t realize our true purpose. Thus, it would be a great disservice not only to us, but to the many people we’re capable of helping. In order to find what we’re supposed to do and who we’re supposed to help, we should start by taking ourselves and our abilities seriously. Everything that we do, and all the passion we could muster, should be pointed towards fulfilling this purpose and living the most out of life by allowing others to do the same.

3. How and Where People Network

One of the most reliable success secrets out there – whether for small, medium or big and online or offline business – is networking. Finding the right people to connect and share business matters with is important, since we trust our peers now more than ever. Once we’ve built on that trust and harnessed its benefits, we’re able to recommend each other in order to expand our network.

Discover how much time you need to devote, what type of network you prefer, what tools are used nowadays, where people and businesses choose to meet, how many people is appropriate for a group, what topics are shared and other such aspects you need to consider when creating your connections. Keep in mind that however and wherever you choose to network, it’s always important to be honest about what you do and stand for, as well as what you could offer people and other businesses.

4. Ever Onward, No Retreat (Never Give Up)

Success doesn’t come easily, and whoever says otherwise did not earn his. No matter how long it takes or how hard it gets, we should not let fear and doubt get in the way. We should never give up and deviate from the goal we’ve set at the start of whatever journey we chose to embark on.

If we give up, we’ll never know if that last effort could have brought success. If we lose hope, we lose sight of our dreams. I’m not saying that it’s bad to take a respite from all these stress, pressures and problems we might encounter along the way. In fact, it is advisable. :)

Rest if you must, if it will help clear your head and renew your strength. But always make sure that you will rise and go back fighting for whatever goal you’ve set. Remember too, that you should take the time to enjoy every bit of success you achieve – no matter how small or trivial it may seem to some. These little pieces of success would help build you up for the bigger one that is sure to come.

5. Importance of Communication in Business

In business or in life, it’s important to know how to communicate. It’s with communication that we’re able to share whatever feelings, needs, intentions, ideas or messages we might have. It’s also how we’re able to find out what others want and how we could go about helping them.

In business, it’s very important to know how to communicate effectively. A good communicator doesn’t necessarily have to be good in business, but a remarkable business owner or head should be good at communicating. This includes written and oral communication, as well as the manner you carry yourself and listening skills. Find out if you have what it takes to be an effective communicator and how you could harness your abilities to be one.

6. What If You Could Do Anything?

“What if you could do anything?” Now this is a question that demands a lot of thought. It presents plenty of possibilities and exceeds limitations. Why, then, is it very hard to answer? Oh, it may seem easy at first, but once all your forgotten hopes, dreams and interests pop up, you’ll have an overflowing plate of choices to deal with. :)

Considering this question also requires a lot of thought. It’s not enough to fantasize about doing all these amazing things. If you plan on turning some of them into reality, careful consideration should be done, especially regarding the nitty-gritty details of each. In other words, fulfilling the dream isn’t enough. You also need to have the knowledge and training for each. If you could do anything, what would you do?

More often than not, we only have ourselves to blame for whatever failures we experience. In the same way that we have ourselves to congratulate when we achieve success. I’m not saying that those around you do not help, but at the end of the day, each decision made comes from you. Here are seven tips that could help you start up your own business in no time.

Once you stop lying to yourself, know that anything is possible, understand that there are hurdles that come with the perks, stop making excuses and dive into it while learning, make sure to accomplish at least three things a day, accept that failure is a possibility and learn everything you can from those who’ve come before you – then, you’re on the right path.

Communicating Leadership

Businesses are run by people. They thrive on the capabilities of these individuals and more so, on the skills of their leader. This is why in business as in life – and aside from great big ideas and stellar marketing strategies – building good relationships is one of the best-kept success secrets. A good working environment is key, together with cooperative attitude from colleagues and encouraging mentor-ship from its leaders. Imagine how stressful it is if you work in a discouraging environment with teammates and bosses who do more harm than good. I mean, competition and criticism are not taboo as long as they are constructive as well as aimed towards the improvement of the whole team, even encouraging personal growth of the individuals within, and the business itself – not just that of its greedy and destructive members. Can you tell that I feel very strongly about this? <g>

My husband, Ric Thompson, and I are very lucky to have had wonderful mentors and good professional and personal relationships with our business partners. It really helps boost morale and profits when we’re all inspired to work well with each other. Working in this great environment has given us the impetus to build several successful online marketing businesses that have allowed us to live the life we wanted.

These ideals were discussed in two Small Business CEO Magazine articles entitled Importance of Communication in Business and New Leadership Challenges of 2009 and Beyond written by Simon Johnson and Michael Marshall respectively.

A little more conversation

Effective communication brings about many good things – a more established relationship with colleagues and clients, as well as family and friends, and a more confident outlook that comes from the knowledge that you can convey any message you wish to share and actually have people understand what you’re saying. Believe me, in our business, having people understand you is a very big deal! <g> It’s one of the core goals we aim for in this online marketing world.

It’s also vital, so as not to waste the time of your listener and yours as well <g>, that your message or what you have to share with them is important and useful. It has to be relevant to the situation and to the people involved. Otherwise, you’ll just be wasting precious energy and breath that you could use for better purposes, like building rapport and good relationships with clients and earn profit, instead. <g>

A lot more action please

Of course, being an effective communicator doesn’t only mean you know how to talk well. You also have to know how to communicate using your written words, especially for remote or online businesses that mostly reach their existing and potential clients via emails, newsletters, journals, blog posts, websites and the like. At the same time, you also have to know how to use your body language and gestures, which would definitely come in handy during those long and busy but network-rich conventions and meetings. When you’re tired and weary from a long days work, you can’t let your clients and people see that. You need to keep your energy and chin up. Who would buy your product if you yourself do not look and seem confident about it? <g>

However, all these communication skills would be useless if you do not know how to listen. It’s in listening that you’ll be able to discern what the people around you need and want. Since they themselves would be telling you what they want and how they want it, it would be very beneficial to you if you pay very close attention, listen well and know how to turn these learnings into effective and profitable plans.

A good communicator doesn’t necessarily make a good leader, but a good leader needs to be a good communicator. With this skill, he can build good relationships with his staff, clients and colleagues. He’ll not only be able to promote his business effectively, he’ll also be able to bring it to a whole new level given the right opportunities, method and timing.

Why they follow you

Now, don’t get me wrong, good communication skills aren’t enough to be a good leader in business or any organization for that matter – especially in these times and environment. If that were the case, people would just be fighting over the presidency and every other available top position all the time – well, it’s not like some don’t already, but that’s beside the point. <g>
For a business to run smoothly, a leader has to be experienced, educated, trained and continues to learn and hone himself for the benefit of his people and the company. Good manners, deeds and right conduct could only go so far and would not save you from economic downturn. You should have the capacity to salvage the crucial elements that make up of your business. For this, you should have the right mindset, confidence and knowledge that you’ve earned during the course of your career.

True, good manners and deeds would earn you many friends and admirers at easier times, but leadership and managing skills would actually earn you their respect. Trust me, that’s a more satisfying feeling to have – knowing that people trust you enough to lead them out of whatever rut you’re stuck in. <g>

Aside from his people and products, a good leader has another thing to consider in running the business. The physical location of the office is also important, since it could determine your success or failure. You need to know where and how to place your business in the most profitable location you could find. If you’re dealing with an online business, then home is one of the best places to set up in – as long as you have the right software, tools, sites and strategy to market your service and close deals.

Leaders should also have passion and the need to establish a good legacy that could be passed on to the future leaders and employees of the business. He should not only focus on building a good name for himself, though that would be good too <g>, but more importantly, building a good name for the company. Establishing a company’s own unique business culture and processes would also prove to be effective and would set you apart from the rest.

A leader should also be a visionary. He should be able to anticipate and accept changes; learn to choose which trend to follow; establish a healthy attitude, morale and mindset and encourage growth and learning among his people. As a group, they’ll have the ability to weather any economic condition and bring their company to a higher level of experience, service and success.
