Of success and other things

Of Success and other things_1

Success, like everything else out there, means different things to different people. Is it measured by the amount of wealth one has, or how he became rich like that? Is it weighed by the number of people you help or the friends and loved ones who are there for you no matter what? Does everyone get to experience it, or is it as elusive as a summer breeze?

Textbook definition

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines success as, “degree or measure of succeeding; favorable or desired outcome; the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence; one that succeeds.” Pretty general definitions aren’t they? <g> Allow me to share some success I’ve personally encountered.

Attempts made

Plenty of individuals have tried to define success through time. Philosophers, athletes, inventors, scientists, U.S. Presidents and many more have tried to capture this feeling, situation or state in words.

There is one definition found online that hits it pretty close though. It goes,He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.” Bessie Stanley, Lincoln Republican, 21 December 1905

Now, this was a woman who knew very well how to string words together to convey something meaningful. <g> In her definition, she somehow managed to touch on the physical, mental, emotional, intellectual and even spiritual aspects of the word. She was successful, because she was able to share her thoughts with plenty of people. By the number of times her quote has been published and republished, she has made a pretty vague concept a little more tangible.

Thriving business

Now, let me share with you my colleague Karen Armon’s published article entitled, “From $100K+ Executive to Entrepreneur: 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Become an Entrepreneur” in our online magazine Small Business CEO.

In her article, Karen discussed 7 questions that are ideal to ask before transitioning from being some bigwig executive to becoming a small business entrepreneur. These are the same questions she asked when she herself went through the same thing.

Counting in several aspects such as motivation, background, strategies, resources, actions, marketing and time, she successfully outlined the feelings, decisions, preparations and other aspects and technicalities involved in making this big, bold move.

Her personal achievement of being able to make her own business grow after facing unemployment, choosing to make her own mark in the business world instead by becoming her own employer and her goal to spread her story and tips to as many readers as possible are parts of her own success.

Back in 2003, I myself distributed an online book with 101 compiled quotes pertaining to success, or some form thereof, from well-known personalities. It’s entitled Successisms.com

I started compiling them for myself but eventually, I felt that the inspiration to be had from these words should be shared with many. Over the years, it has reached and touched plenty of people. I, for one, am glad to have been part of spreading these intuitive definitions of success from those who, at one form or another, have achieved it. That, in a way, is one of my many successes. <g>

Making more and living more

Running various online marketing businesses with my husband, Ric, and our colleagues at Small Business CEO and HealthyWealthynWise has awarded us success in the form of financial freedom and personal fulfillment. Thus, we enjoy life as much as we can, as often as we can. We travel to beautiful places around the world, eat at our favorite restaurants, occasionally splurge on birthdays and holidays and more. The most important part of this freedom though, is the peace of mind it gives us for being blessed with the opportunity to raise our two sons, Chandler and Stefan, in a good, comfortable environment (with as much life lessons, meaningful experiences and motherly advice I could muster and squeeze in <g>).

Giving more

In addition to the many perks we enjoy from having financial freedom, we are also lucky enough to be able to help others realize their own success. Through online donation and lending sites such as Run Tellman Run and Kiva, we are able to donate a certain amount of money to people who need and put them to good use.

The fact that Tellman gets to help homeless youth in the U.S. and the famers from the Philippines and taxi owner from El Salvador are able to support their families are also big chunks of our success.

Whether it’s about a mother raising a wonderful child, a father teaching his daughter to drive, a child’s first step, a student’s first A, a graduate’s first job, a lover’s first kiss, a farmer’s good harvest, an artist’s first exhibit and the list goes on and on — whatever the form, culture, language or definition, success is found everywhere. The choice to either embrace and share it or shun and turn away from it fully depends on you.

Have you achieved success in your life? Do you have a wonderful success story to tell? Share it with us.

More success to you!

Liz
